張凱洋 ( Chang Kai-Yung) From Taiwan - 'Rainstorm 2' oil on canvas (2014)
This painting was awarded 2014 Silver Medal, National Hsinchu Living Arts Center Painting Competition for this painting 'Rainstorm'.
Chang Kai- Yung (張凱洋) was born Changhua in 1972, Taiwan. He graduated from Fu-Hsin Trade & Arts School in 1991.
His work is both interesting and engaging, what initially draws the viewer to his work is the degree of detail and accuracy and secondly the subject matter. The method of discipline used is primarily classical painting techniques such as tempera with a contemporary style. Thus homogenizing the contrast between contemporary imagery with classical technique.
His work would be described as surrealism. When you look upon the paintings you enter into a dreamlike world. His desire is to create "a new reality through illusion". He captures the subconscious imaginings a unique symbolic language of dreams that is translated onto the canvas. Kai-Yung is able to convey such emotions as loneliness and illusion through his work. An example his paintings often depict emotions through metaphor with the use of the umbrella. Its symbolism builds the scene, leads sentiment, under the umbrella is the containment of all emotions. There are many contradictions and conflicts within the paintings which lead the viewer to examine the paintings in more detail to gain understanding and meaning from them.
"Personally, I believe that melancholy scenes work better in projecting a poetic beauty. (He speaks about 'love under the umbrella' painting).....The women in the rain, crystal clear and full of tender love. The love under the umbrella is so out of this world and romantic. Under the umbrella is a heaven where pattering rain whispers words of love. Let's meet again under the umbrella seeking love in this fantasy.." Chang Ka- Yung.
