Johnny de Witt was born as the 11th child on the 10th of November 1964 in Dordrecht, The Netherlands. There’s been a fascination for stories and their illustrations for as long as he can remember; folklore, myths and legends in particular. Inspired by this, he started drawing and painting at a young age. When he was about 9, he became interested in martial arts, which resulted in practicing Taekwondo. He achieved the black belt (second Dan), and later became a teacher of this art. When John was a teenager he became captivated by World music and Jazz. He met his wife at the age of 16, and on his 19th, his passion for music lead him to playing the congas. As a freelancer he soon played in various bands in Europe, accompanied dance, did studio jobs and gave workshops. He married Susanne on the 2nd of July 1987 and in the early 90s they started a publicity agency that had design as incentive. After three years he decided that this was not his calling and focused himself completely on drawing, painting, music and raising his daughter Kyrah – who was born on the 5th of November 1993 and has physical limitations. He took her to as many music events, art events and dance accompaniments as he could. Because of this, Kyrah developed an enthusiasm for music, myths, legends, art and architecture at a young age – which triggered her passion for photography. They moved to Papendrecht in 2005, from where they work now. During Kyrah’s stay in the rehabilitation centre on her 15th birthday she received her first professional camera. While rehabilitating she studies pre-university secondary education – the highest variant in the secondary educational system of the Netherlands. Her physical limitations made her insecure, and her therapists encouraged her to make self-portraits. These pictures inspired John to make her limitations her strength, and lead to creating the works they now – after an intense 2-year collaboration – show to the world.
